PAVIA is an espresso bar, café, gallery and community grocer. Known for their fair trade, locally sourced ingredients, made-from-scratch menus and sustainable food practices, they are a true gem in Halifax.
What plenty of people may not know is that the café also holds rich ties to Italy. PAVIA’s co-owner, Christopher Webb, is a visual artist who has lived in Amantea and Florence, and for the past 10 years, he and his partner, Victoria Foulger have been leading annual art and culture tours of Italy.
When they had approached me to redesign their coffee cups, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to highlight this wonderful facet of PAVIA’s story and spirit. Together, we had picked out four different Italian sayings for each of the cup sizes. Every saying was drawn in custom Spencerian lettering and paired with copywriting that tied its English translation to PAVIA’s excellent coffee.
The cups were designed to become an educational touchpoint and encourage people to pause, enjoy and sip slowly — as if they were in a café in Italy.
